Dissolve Lip Fillers.

Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment

Here at the London Lip Clinic, we are pleased to be able to offer lip filler dissolving treatment to our clients. Lip filler dissolving treatment is used to break down unwanted dermal filler. This procedure is a safe and comfortable way to return the lips to their natural size and shape. During treatment, hyaluronidase is injected into the lips. This enzyme occurs in the body naturally, so it’s completely safe to use in the majority of cases.

Lip fillers typically break down over time due to naturally occurring hyaluronidase. When filler dissolving is required, concentrated doses of hyaluronidase are injected into the lips. The injections break down the hyaluronic acid in the lip filler. This is then disposed of by the body’s natural systems.

What Conditions Can Be Treated With Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment?

Poorly trained practitioners are most likely to produce inferior results when injecting lip fillers. They are much more likely to inject fillers in such as way that will cause health issues or problems with shape. Poorly injected filler needs to be removed in time before it has the chance to do permanent damage to your lips. Veins or arteries can be blocked which leads to infection, swelling or even necrosis. There is the risk of blindness when filler blocks the area surrounding the eyes.

When lip fillers are injected too close to the surface of the skin, lumps and bumps can occur. This makes the lips appear misshapen. The surface can become uneven and look unsightly. When filler isn’t administered properly, it can migrate to other areas of the face. This leads to you looking swollen in other areas such as above the lips. Another issue with lip fillers is overfilling. If you’re in the wrong hands, there is a risk that your lips will be overfilled. This can lead to sore and sensitive lips, pain, bruising and discolouration.

As ‘back-street’ clinics rise in popularity, we have seen an increasing number of patients who wish to dissolve their lip fillers. We are able to give them back their natural lip shape in a safe environment. If there is nothing wrong with your lip filler, you can also come for treatment to allow your lips to go back to their natural shape.

How Does Lip Filler Dissolving Work?

Hyaluronidase is a special enzyme occurring naturally in the human body. When it is injected into the problem area it starts to break down the filler. This treatment works by breaking down the hyaluronic acid in the filler and encouraging the body to reabsorb it. Tissue permeability is increased and the molecular bonds of the hyaluronic acid in the filler are broken down.

The Benefits of Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment

Many people experience issues with fillers migrating to other areas of the face over time. Some people find that over the course of a couple of months, fillers can move to other areas, causing problems. This causes issues with the contour of the area which was treated and the surrounding tissue. When too much filler is used, the area becomes too pronounced and looks unnatural. This is where the benefits of lip filler dissolving come into play. The hyaluronidase simply dissolves the hyaluronic acid based filler, returning the area to its natural shape and size.

Pre-Appointment Care for Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment

It’s recommended to avoid medications that thin the blood for the 3 days before your appointment unless instructed by your doctor. This includes ibuprofen or aspirin. We advise you to avoid drinking alcohol in the 24 hours before your visit to the London Lip Clinic for treatment. If you plan to travel within the next fortnight, it’s recommended that you don’t book treatment with us as you’ll need to be available for a follow-up appointment.

The process of Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment

At the start of your lip filler dissolving treatment, a patch test is performed about half an hour before your appointment. This involves testing for allergies in the forearm with a small needle. The test will take less than 5 seconds to perform. If you don’t want to have this done on the day, you can have the test performed at another more convenient time prior to your treatment.

You will receive a full consultation which will assess your lips and find out if the treatment is appropriate. After this, the procedure takes about 15 minutes. Any makeup, serums or skincare are removed as the skin is cleaned prior to treating the area. Next, the injections are administered using small needles. The length of time the treatment takes can vary between patients. On average, it takes between 5-8 minutes to complete the procedure. There is minimal pain involved in having the injections as a numbing cream is applied prior to treatment.

At the London Lip Clinic, we are able to ensure that we get safe, beautiful results with this treatment. Having your treatment administered by a fully trained, qualified doctor means that any complications can be treated effectively as they arise. With an experienced injector, the process is as safe and as painless as it can be. As customer care and safety are of the utmost importance to us, this gives you the benefits of flawless results.

At your appointment, pictures of your lips will be taken to keep track of your starting point. You’ll receive advice, giving you the information you need to make an informed decision about your treatment. Prior to lip filler dissolving treatment, a numbing cream is applied to the area to help you to avoid any discomfort during the injections. It will take about 20 minutes for the area to become numb.

Hyaluronidase is available as a powder form. This is combined with a saline solution and is injected where the filler needs to be broken down. The solution starts to work a few minutes after being injected. This is the ideal solution in time-sensitive or emergency situations where the filler has been injected wrongly or in a dangerous way. Lip filler dissolving treatment will cause swelling in the treated area, so you won’t see the results straight away. It takes about 24-48 hours (or longer in some cases) for the swelling to go down. After this, you’ll be able to see your perfect results.

Post-Appointment Care for Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment

For the next 24 to 48 hours after lip filler dissolving treatment there will be some redness and swelling in the treated area. It’s recommended to book your appointment either in the evening or on a day that you have no other plans. We will discuss your individual post-appointment care with you when you come for your appointment. After your treatment we advise you to do the following:

  • You’ll need to avoid using makeup for the 12 hours after treatment.
  • It’s important to avoid facial scrubs or rubbing the area for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Sunbathing and direct sunlight should be avoided for the next 24 hours.
  • You should avoid swimming for 24 hours after your appointment.
  • Strenuous exercise will need to be avoided for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • It’s also advisable to avoid any excessive alcohol use for a day after your treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid using any skincare which has active ingredients for the next 3 days. This includes Beta Hydroxy Acid, vitamin C, retinols, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids.

The Side-Effects of Lip Filler Dissolving Treatment

There are not many side-effects associated with lip filler dissolving treatment. It’s relatively common to experience some swelling in the area that was treated. This can last up to a few days post-treatment. There is likely to be some bruising in the area due to having the injections. Side-effects such as these are all completely normal, so there’s nothing to worry about if you experience them. However, if you still have symptoms after three or four days you can contact us here at the London Lip Clinic with your concerns.

With this treatment, there is the chance of developing an allergic reaction. This can cause severe side-effects. For this reason, we perform the patch test before your treatment. By doing this, we know that the treatment is going to be safe for you. After having your treatment, if you experience any allergy symptoms like pain, itching or shortness of breath you will need to seek medical attention straight away. Never delay in getting help if you do have an allergic reaction to treatment. Although this is rare, it’s important to get help immediately if you have any of the symptoms mentioned.

Once the recovery phase is complete, your lips will return to their natural size and shape once again. If you’re going to have filler treatment again we recommend waiting 2 weeks before planning an appointment. Waiting will give the lips the time they need to heal properly. It also gives the hyaluronidase time to fully disperse and be broken down. What this means is that when you do get new filler injected it won’t be dissolved by the remaining hyaluronidase.

Common Patient Concerns

Often, people have a few concerns about the safety of lip filler dissolving treatment. As the treatment utilises a material which occurs naturally in the human body the process is extremely safe to perform. As already stated earlier, the only problem is that there can be an allergic reaction to treatment. An allergic reaction can cause the hyaluronidase to break down the hyaluronic acid in your lips as well as the filler. This means that some of your natural volume will be lost.

It’s important to clarify the risk involved well in advance so you can be fully informed when you make your choice to have treatment. We believe that making you aware of this risk can help you to make an informed decision. If you don’t want to take the risk, you could wait for your filler to break down naturally, or you may decide to go ahead with the treatment anyway. If the worst does happen, you can always opt to have a small amount of filler injected to replenish any volume lost.

Lip filler dissolving treatment can only be performed safely by a trained practitioner, so never be tempted to have the procedure done by anyone who isn’t medically trained. If you do make the choice to have your lip filler dissolved, it doesn’t mean you have to close the door to future filler treatments. It’s very fashionable to have your lip fillers dissolved and then start again with the filler.

Once your filler has been removed, we can start again with a blank canvas. This will enable us to shape your lips in order to produce different results. Typically, it is becoming increasingly popular to go for a more natural look. The fuller pout many enjoyed in the past is out, and an increasing number of women are opting to have their fillers dissolved and their lips remodelled. Whatever your preferences, we can adapt our approach to meet your needs.

When Can I Expect to See the Results?

Once the hyaluronidase is injected into the lips, the dermal filler will start to break down immediately. After about 48 hours after treatment you’ll notice a significant reduction in filler. Bear in mind that the swelling in the treated area will need time to go down. Some patients feel discouraged after having treatment because there is still some swelling in the treated area, making it difficult to see the results. After 48 to 84 hours, any swelling in this area should be gone.

Why You May Need Multiple Sessions

You may find that you need multiple sessions in order to break down all the filler in your lips. The reason for this is that different types of filler respond in different ways to treatment. Also, if you have had many filler treatments, the filler builds up over time. It may be that the filler has become integrated into the tissue. For this reason, you may need multiple treatments to break down all the filler. Small lumps of filler are likely to dissolve fairly quickly. Wider areas will break down in sections. You may find that the filler is gone from some areas but is still showing in other places.

In short, the process of lip filler dissolving treatment is not an exact science. Neither is injecting lip filler in the first place. This means that you may need several treatments to break down all the filler that has built up in your lips. Based on your outcomes after the first treatment, we can assist you further by offering you expert advice on further treatments.
